Types of motorcycles

The type of motorcycle is up to your style of riding, skill and ability, the level of your licence and your personal preference. You may like the classic look of a naked Triumph Bonneville, enjoy the comfort of a cruiser or a sports tourer for city and country riding. Research the motorcycle you are after and ask plenty of questions from your dealer.

Cruisers

  • Comfortable to ride
  • Low seat height makes it easier to ride
  • Strictly for the road only
  • Cruisers are available as a LAMS bike (Learner approved Motorcycle)
  • Can be quite heavy and large
  • Long rides can lead to fatigue due to high handlebars
  • Limited cornering ability due to a lack of ground clearance

Tourer

  • Comfortable seating
  • Perfect for long distance riding
  • Good performance and handing
  • Large fuel tanks
  • Tourers are available as a LAMS bike (Learner approved Motorcycle)
  • Heaps of tech features
  • Plenty of storage
  • Heavy on the fuel
  • Can be large and heavy
  • For experienced riders
  • Expensive to purchase

BMW K1600 GTL/GT – Not LAMS Approved

Naked or Standard

  • Easy to ride
  • Ideal for city and country riding
  • Comfortable
  • Nakeds are available as a LAMS bike (Learner approved Motorcycle).
  • Good handling and performance
  • Economical to buy and ride
  • Can lack in tech features
  • No fairings makes long rides less comfortable

Sports Tourer

  • Great performance and speed
  • Great LAMS bike for advanced riders
  • Sports Tourers are available as a LAMS bike (Learner approved Motorcycle)
  • Comfortable to ride

  • Large range to choose from
  • Can be uncomfortable on long rides

Suzuki GSX650F – LAMS Approved

Super Sports

  • Extremely fast and powerful
  • For highly experienced riders only
  • Excellent cornering, braking and performance
  • Not available as a LAMS bike (Learner approved Motorcycle).
  • Designed for racing and street riding
  • Can be uncomfortable for long rides due to thin seat and posture
  • Can be difficult to ride in congested traffic

Yamaha YZF-R1 – Not LAMS Approved

Adventure Tourers

  • Great for long trips
  • On-road and off-road riding
  • Comfortable
  • Can be light weight
  • Adventure Toures are available as a LAMS bike (Learner approved Motorcycle)
  • Good durability
  • Relatively low cost
  • Sporty handling
  • Not the best for city riding due to height and handling
  • Can be difficult to ride for learners due to seat height

Honda CB500X – LAMS Approved

Off-Road

    • On-road but mostly off-road riding
    • High ground clearance for off-road riding
    • Light weight

 

  • Good durability
  • Relatively low cost
  • Not the best for city riding due to height, handling and tyres
  • Can be difficult to ride for learners due to seat height

  • Excellent on fuel
  • Easy to ride
  • Versatile
  • Low cost
  • Plenty of models to choose from
  • City riding only – depending on the engine size

*Conditions:

  • You must have completed the Pre-Learner course (Pass a motorcycle knowledge test and pay for your license) or a valid RE or R licence to participate in the rider training.
  • Mobile training is availalble within 10km of Brisbane CBD (additional fees may apply for further distances, please contact us).
  • For mobile training please check availability for dates and times.
  • A 50% deposit is required prior to training.
  • Student’s motorcycle must be registered, insured and in a roadworthy condition.
  • Student’s riding gear must include fully enclosed shoes, long pants, motorcycle jacket, gloves and motorcycle helmet.
